Q: Video quality through iMessage poor?

Well why does some come in crystal clear and some come in like crap? Don't bother calling apple support because they are useless. Just talked to the supervisor or whatever they are called and she was lost. I suggest apple hires people who know what they are talking about.

What do you mean some are clear and some aren't? Are these videos from the same source?

The quality of the video is determined at the time the video is made.

Sending via iMessage has no affect on quality.

With iMessage you can send file attachments like photos, screenshots and videos. When using WiFi videos are compressed to 360 x 480 pixels and cannot exceed 100 MB. If you use the Cellular 3G connection the quality of videos is strongly reduced. A video should not be longer than 90 sec.

I think I might have a solution.  This was happening to me and I found out there is a difference depending on whether the video is recorded in the camera app or inside Messages using the "Take Photo or Video" option. Videos made in iMessage send at 480 x 360 4:3 ratio while videos recorded with the camera app send at 720p 16:9 aspect ratio.

So make sure your buddy is using the camera app to record the videos first!

Also make sure both sender and receiver are on Wi-Fi, otherwise the video quality is degraded if it goes over cellular.

I can confirm that iMessage degrades some videos.  I'm using iOS 9.3 with iPhone 6.  When sending video from my mac to iphone via iMessage (basically messaging myself), the video quality is drastically reduced.  I got around this by using AirDrop from Mac to Phone.

Sometimes the same quality video goes through imessage with better quality and sometimes with worse. And Apple doesn't feel it needs to explain how this works. Maybe not knowing what quality a message should have is a big deal for Apple.
