How can I extend the internet connection in my house?

Hello,

I often have to work from home, my modem is setup in my office which is located at one end of my house. This causes a problem as the internet connection on the opposite end is awful. I recently purchased an Airport Express Base Station hoping that this would extend my internet, however, it did not. If you could please post any solutions that you may have it would be greatly appreciated!
