Q: Getting data off G4 Power Mac

Hi, I'm trying to get data files off of an old G4 Power Mac (c. 2000). We have no monitor for the machine, so we need to network it with another computer to see what files are on the G4, and transfer what we need. We do have a new MacBook Air, but I'm not sure whether we can use that machine to view and extract the files. I was told that I would need to use a firewire cable, and start the computer in "target disc mode". I don't know how to do that.
