Q: iPad could not be activated

Recently updated it to iOS 6.1.3 and going through the activation it says that the iPad could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. I've tried connecting the iPad to iTunes but it says the iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Is there a fix to this?

Not a developer running a beta version of the iOS? The reason that I ask is that after Googling this I seem to find a number of users that had this problem that either had developer versions that expired or had downloaded beta versions that expired.

I'm really stumped at this point. I would suggest recovery mode but if the iPad hasn't been activated that is not going to work. Maybe you could try DFU mode, if that would even work. I assume that you backup your iPad.

How do I know if the iOS is a beta version?

I tried DFU mode and it told me the iPad had to be restored to continue or something like that. I restored it and it still won't activate.

If you updated via iTunes or over WiFi, you did not get a Beta version. I'm sorry, but I am stumped now. I do not know why this will not work.

I'm so sorry. I had to run out for a while, and I didn't mean to leave you hanging. If you cannot get any resolution to this I suggest an appointment and an Apple Store Genuis Bar. It doesn't cost anything and it is probably your best bet now.

No problem man. Most likely that's what I'm going to have to do. Again thanks for the help.

My theory is that the iPads are both 2nd Gen. The UDID on Apple's side might be somewhere else and the server might see that there are two devices with the same UDID, but on different OS's, there is only a 0.0000000000001% chance of that happening, though.

So, if you cannot connect using the Wi-Fi on the iPad. Try plugging it into your PC (or Mac). If both of those still don't work try restarting your Wi-Fi connection (router, modem, etc).

I'm having the SAME EXACT problem. I've tried all the above solutions. Tried a PC, a Mac, Wi-Fi, nothing . This is also a 2nd Gen iPad, also 64gb. Kinda hoping it's some small niche bug that will be fixed soon?

Hi AdrianSaladbar, if you are near an Apple Store stop in with your iPad. I had a similar issue with an iPod Touch a few months ago. I went in and they got me up and running.

    Good luck!

I ran into this same problem last weekend with my iPad2 Verizon (I never activated the cellular service).  Spent 3 hours on the phone with Apple.  They claimed it was a Verizon issue.  Spent 2 hours at the Verizon store.  They said it was an Apple issue.  Spent an hour at the Genius Bar.  They told me to contact Apple Care.  After a 30min call with Apple Care they put in a ticket to “Engineering”.  A Day later they called me back and said it was a hardware issue and that I would have to either buy a refurbished one or a new one.  Today I was prepared to go buy a new one but in a last ditch effort I attempted one LAST activation.  I was in a rush so I blew through some of the screens…

…here’s how it was accidently fixed for me…

The iPad was already connected to WiFi but was turned off.  When this happens you go back to the start screen where it asks you which language.  I hit next, then next again (which country), then next again (this is the WiFi page). I did NOT let the WiFi screen load. I simply hit next before it could get a reading on anything.  Boom!  Right into a successful activation!

So if your iPad2 is stalling and not activating, make sure you’re logged into your WiFi network. Turn your iPad off.  Turn your iPad back on and just hit NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, quickly without letting the pages load completely.

Good luck.  I hope this works for you too.

Have you possibly tried using a different network connection to see if you get the same error?

    Like a non secure connection?

See what happens when trying a non secure connection..

    Hope this helps

Dude your freaking awsome man, I bypassed the non activation error but I'm not sure if the 3g connection works on my ipad because I never used it and after it get any more errors I really would like to sell it. Does your 3g connection work on yours, what seemed to be the problem? Anyways thanks, I'm up and running again.
