how do I delete photos from iphone 5 ios 6.1.3 ?

If I touch the photos icon on the screen, it brings up one of many photos. At the top left is the file name/number of the photo. At the top right is the word "edit". In the middle is the order of the picture ... ie ... 5 of 35.

At the bottom of the screen, there are only two choices. On the left it brings up a screen of icons (where to send the picture) or print, copy, use as wallpaper. The other choice opens another screen : "Slideshow options"

There is no trashcan or the word delete : (
