how do i restore an ipod 4th gen from mac sync to pc sync?

I have a 4th generation ipod....it was given to me yesterday. The woman who had it before passed away a year ago. I am running a windows XP-based PC, downloaded a current copy of iTunes after charging the iPod, and when I plugged in the iPod, iTunes informed me that it detected a Macintosh-formatted iPod and to please restore the iPod before connecting it.

I tired resetting it, that does not take care of the problem...at least, not from my PC. There is a Mac in the house, but it's not mine. I don't think anyone knows what her username and password were either.

What do I do?
