iphone won't sync with PC

When I try to sync my new iphone with my PC in order to transfer my music to my phone, it goes through all the steps, but the last step (#5) shuts down immediately and nothing gets transferred. I've tried it using USB cable and using WIFI with the same results. What am I doing wrong?
