This icon appears (then promptly disappears) in the upper left hand corner of my Safari screen every time I go to a different web site. Does anyone know what it is and why it suddenly started to appear about 3 weeks ago?

No. The icon looks more like three vertical bars increasing in height from left to right. If there is anwhere I can post an image I will - I have captured a screen shot of it.

No Dave - unfortunately I still have no clue. I'm relieved to know that other's are experiencing this as well. Wish I could post an image so it's more clearly understood by the community. 😟
One other piece of info regarding this uninvited "guest" on my internet screens: the icon sometimes appears grey only. I'm inclined to think that when it's grey something is either turned off or unable to communicate with the offending icon. When it's green everything is "working". Just a guess tho...anyway, would appreiciate any information regarding this strange entity. 🙂 JL

You CAN post a screen shot. In your next response, click on the camera icon in the upper bar of your message pane. Then navigate to where the screen shot is located and highlight it, and choose to post it. Then click on "Add Reply".
post a screenshot as ~Bee suggests, and does this icon appear in a guest or new user account ?

This icon appears in my own account on my personal computer. I don't really ever log in as anyone other than me, so.... ???
enable guest, or create a new user login via System Preferences - Users & Groups (Accounts in 10.6) to test with... then we'll know if the 'extra' is restricted to your account, or is system-wide.
Safari Extensions, for example, are per-user - you can disable any/all of those in Safari-Preferences-Extensions
Brilliant! This did the trick! 🙂 I had downloaded "Avast" as extra protection....the icon must have come from that as there were no other programs listed under the extensions tab. Thank you VERY much for your help!! 🙂 And thank you all for you help with this issue.

OKay I as well have avast. But still the question remains what the heck is it for? What's the purpose of it. I was unable to find anything on the avast documentation as well

I think the Greaser_dave is referring to the icon, not the Avast program. I've had Avast for a while now (more than a year) and that icon appeared a few months ago so it seems it's something that Avast threw in with an update. Hate to have to search through the multtudes of program description and explanation to discover what that icon represents. The question for me now is, do I disable Avast or not?
OK - just found out what this is. It is a website reputation (WebRep) extension in Avast. It apparently checks website safety ratings. Dave - if you do what andyBall_UK suggested above that should stop the icon from appearing. But Avast will still be working. Ahhhhh.....now ain't that a relief???

What is the bar level icon that appears in upper left corner of my Safari screen? Sometimes is green, sometimes grey - looks like a volume level icon. Started showing up about 3 weeks ago.
