My wonderful DaisyDisk app shows that I have a folder called Application Support, which takes up A LOT of space on my HD. Does anyone know if the content of this folder is necessary somehow, or if it is safe to delete it?
I'm guessing it's needed for the computer to run, but I'd really like to know. I could use that extra space.
That is probably the Application Support folder located in your Home Library. That contains a lot of functionallity for you apps and you definitely don't want to delete it. You will lose a lot of data such as Contacts.

To find what's hogging your disk space try Omni DiskSweeper
If you go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info > Storage tab, which sections are taking up the most space? A screenshot might help.
