Enable Disk Use is not in bold print, but it is checked. I don't know what has happened, and I'm not able to use it.

Under normal circumstances if you have your update preferences set to "manually manage songs and playlists" the "enable disk use" box is greyed out, checked and enabled by default. Have you got your iPod set to manual update?
