Making a logical "path" to referenced HD

I recently transferred my files from an old to a new iMac. I could not get A3 to open on the new machine see thread..https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4975859?answerId=21844612022#21844612022 Leonie helped me get A3 to open but I now have a few images that are offline and also notice that there is a rather convoluted path for the Library I'm using. My referenced images are stored in an external HD called "Aperture Masters." And this worked well on the old machine. I now have two external HDs one, called "Photo Masters," being the backup of the other. With the new iMac, I switched the destination of the images, in the import pane, from Aperture Masters to Photo Masters. I'm quite confused and would be very happy if someone could guide me on the correct procedure. Thanks, jp

The right hand image is an example of a distorted image which I presume is offline.

Don't confuse the location of the library with the location of the master files if you're using referenced masters. There is no relationship between the two whatsoever.

The library can be anywhere you want, but the library has *specific* information about the path information of the masters. So you need to have the masters available in the exact same path on the new machine as they were on the old machine; it doesn't matter where the library is at all.

It is WAY easier to use managed masters if you have the space, and don't have very good control over your external storage where you put the referenced masters.

jp, this will set the place were the new original images will be stored, but Aperture will still be looking for the originals of your old images in there old location.

Do you have both drives connected, when you are browsing your images?

select them and go to File..Locate Reference Files.

dbmore, that is a good idea, but we already tried that in the other thread, see

Re: Aperture will not open

The big problem is, that Aperture shows managed files as missing referenced files. Reconnect does not work for managed files.

William, the broken part of the library is a managed library, with some originals, that are showing as missing, all imported from PS or Flickr.

The problem occured after moving the library to a different drive. It might be a problem with filenames being too long for a non-MacOS X filesystem.

Jd, check, if the original image files are really missing. They might still be inside the Aperture library.

  • Ctrl-click the library and select "Show Package Contents":
  • Open the folder "Masters".
  • Now you need to know, when you imported the missing images. The Masters folder is sorted by the date of the "Import session".

If you can find the original files copy them to a folder on the Desktop. Is there something funny with the filenames?

I'm struggling here on two fronts, Leonie. Time and technically challenged. Aperture wont open. I ran the "fixes" the other night, leaving the "repair library" running because it seemed like it was going to take for ever. The next morning A3 wouldn't open. I know if I re-install A3 4.4 Aperture will open but within a day or two it reverts to "not opening."

I accessed the Aperture Library.aplibrary but still no Masters in the "show package contents."User uploaded file
