When I select the Classic layout in Mail, the column for Author is not seen and under View Sorting the Author column is greyed out and not available.
How do I reset this layout to a default mode so that Author is seen?
First add the column from "View > Columns > Author", then you can use it for sorting.

In "View > Columns > the Author selection is greyed out and can not be selected therefore I am not able to add it.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
The Back to Mac is not selected, yet when I select add another account, nothing occurs and I am also unable to select a guest account. Any ideas?
Did you unlock the padlock? Not trying to be insulting, but people have missed it before. 😉 Are you using the + on the left to add?
