Safari Preferences Missing?

Hiya. I can't seem to open my Preferences in Safari v 2.0.3

When I scroll down to "Preferences" under the "File" menu; nothing happens.

I was able to see the preference earlier today, so fear that I've hidden them somehow, inadvertently. Any suggestions? Thanks so much -- SMC

Strange. Haven't heard of this one before. If you inadvertently moved the preference file, the next time you restarted Safari, it would automatically write a new preference file.

The Preference file is found in your User Library>Preference folder. Look for .com.apple.safari.plist. If it is not there, use spotlight to locate it. Once found, move it back to your Preferences folder.

Let me know the location of the file before I offer any suggestions.

SMC,

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

First of all, make sure you are looking in the right place. Preferences are not in the File menu, they are under the Safari Menu.

If a normal restart will not change the behavior, quit Safari, find the com.apple.Safari.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and let us know what happens.

I'm happy I discovered Apple Discussions. Thank you both for the welcome and your help.
I moved the preference file from my User Library to my desktop and restarted the computer--and that seemed to have solved the problem. Just restarting the program wasn't enough. Hum, strange?
I've been using iTunes to download lots of audio cd's, while also browsing in Safari, and I've been having problems with Safari either crashing or doing odd things like this. Any thoughts? Thanks again -- SMC

Preference files can become corrupted. It happens. There's a myriad of factors, each with the potential to "make computing life interesting".

Best way to repair a corrupt preference file is to trash the original, letting the application automatically create a new one.

In your case, Safari created a new preference file, resolving whatever corrupt coding caused the crashes. The new file now reflects Safari's "default settings". Best check the preferences to make sure Safari is set up to your liking.

Going back and forth between Safari and iTunes didn't create the Safari problem. I'd say it was something you did within Safari. I guess the important part is you now have an added strategy to use in the event Safari exhibits similar problems in the future.
