iCloud Backup - Is locking the phone necessary?

My phone received water damage and I bought a new one. However, I haven't backed it to iCloud in 30 weeks...My home button and lock button both do not work on my old phone. Is there a way to back it up to iCloud without locking it?

Locking it refers to pressing the power button once to put it in sleep mode. If you can't do this, you won't be able to back it up to iCloud. Back it up to your computer using iTunes instead. Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now. Also transfer your purchases by going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.

You're welcome. You can import your camera roll photos (and videos) to your computer using your USB cable, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083. If you need to save photo stream photos too, save them to the camera roll so they can also be imported. To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos you want to save, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.

The backup you make to your computer using iTunes will also include your camera roll photos and videos.
