My "Display Audio | USB" will not play sound coming from a USB input

Why won't my "Display Audio | USB" play sound coming from a USB input (i.e. a record turntable). When I select the turntable device for sound input I can see the Input level "bounce" with the music but I cannot get the sound to route through my display.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

You need some software to copy the audio from the input to the output. The simplest is LineIn

You can also use QuickTime Player (Applications folder). Select "New Audio Recording" in the "File" menu. In the "Audio Recording" window, click the triangle at the right and select the desired audio input. Slide the volume slider (below the red record button) to the right.
