Some Mail accts suddently not connecting?

Hi, been hunting through the forums for a couple of hours now and haven't seen anything EXACTLY relevant to my problems.

The Deets:

I'm on a 2011 iMac i5, I was running 10.8.2 when the issue cropped up (I think) but updated to 10.8.3 as part of troubleshooting, to no effect.

Basically, several but not all of my email accounts stopped being able to connect, so I cannot send OR receive email through them. Intermittently, I will have gotten a few emails via the other accounts, but the volume is far less than normal. I did reset and then re-enter my passwords from Email accounts just to be sure. My gmail accounts seem to be working okay, and there appears to be some email coming through to webmail, it's just not getting from the servers to my Mail acct due to the cnxn issue.

I've already contacted my ISP and received some rather lackluster help that did, however, confirm that all of my settings appear to be accurate (as I didn't change them from the time it was working a few days ago, this didn't really surprise me). When I click to Take All Accounts online, nothing happens. When I click Check Again in the Connection Doctor, nothing changes. I've tried deleting the relevant Mail entries from my keychain, no effect. I've tried verifying and repairing Keychain access, no effect. I've tried setting access control to a few of the items I believe to be the relevant keychain entries to unlimited access, and nothing happened. I've tried creating a new email account using correct settings but IMAP rather than POP and it isn't able to connect either. I've tried changing the incoming port to 143 (from 110) and left SSL off for both, to no effect.

Weirdly, one of the green-lit accounts that says it's connected successfully is the one that keychain keeps prompting me to enter the password every few minutes.

Here is some of what Connection Doctor says. Under Details,

"Could not connect to this POP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the serer accepts connections on port 110. If it does not, change the port number in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."

Here is a line of code related to the email acct for which I keep getting prompted to enter the code, despite it already being entered and saved (I've replaced the website address for privacy):

"

READ Apr 23 01:16:11.230 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.MYWEBSITE.com -- port:110 -- socket:0x7f942d3884e0 -- thread:0x7f942a44a6b0

-ERR Authentication failed."

One thing that's new that I am just noticing is that in the GIGANTIC amount of code that it shows in the Details section, I do not see any reference to it even trying to authenticate the two main emails that are offline!!? What does that mean? Any thoughts and helps appreciated.

I would need a way to back up my emails before deleting and resetting as I don't have copies on the server...trying to be thorough here but am pretty much a newb at email troubleshooting. TIA!

I think you have done some of this.

Mail Problems

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Thank you for replying! It turns out there are a couple of things going on, including some DNS settings that I myself changed that I did not realize also affected where my some of my email was hosted (*sheepish*). HOWEVER, two of the email addresses I have been having trouble with do not have anything to do with that, so I am in the process of reevaluating the scope of the "symptoms" as it were.

At this point, it looks like one connectivity issue is send-only (as in, I have been receiving email successfully, but the SMTP server cannot connect) - this is a Google Group email address that I have set up an account for in MacMail for the convenience of checking email in one place. I was able to successfuly send email on Friday, and it's a work email so I didn't notice until Monday that anything was amiss with sending.

The other issue is one email address that keychain seems to keep "forgetting" the password on, as I get prompted every few minutes to plug it in, then won't recognize it successfully, so can't send OR receive email from that one.

In light of the above, I will revisit the links you sent, as they may be able to shed some light...I will post as soon as I learn anything! Thank you

Sorry I have no answer but describing my very similar problem might help someone more technical to work it out.

I have only one account and that is with Yahoo. Most of the time I use web mail and once or twice a week download and file recieved emails in Mail.

I have three times in the last three weeks or month been unable to download from the Yahoo server.

I had changed nothing beforehand.

Mail repeatedly wanted me to reenter my password which didn't work. I changed my password on Yahoo and then in Mail. It worked, but then the next time it didn't.

I did the same again and it worked, but the next time it didn't. I have changed my password three times in order to get my mail from the server onto my Mac.

Since then I have checked the settings in Mail, deleted my account and set it up again

At present I cannot send or recieve from Mail on my Mac.

I can go to Yahoo Mail on my Mac and ipad and iphone. I can use the Yahoo app on ipad and iphone okay.

Basically I am lost, the problem appears to be with Mail rather than Yahoo. I will try opening a Gmail account and see what happens.

I have a 2012 Macbook Air and up to date Mountain Lion.

I appreciate everyone's efforts...I gave up and switched everything over to my gmail and whatnot. I don't have time to debug Apple's programs for them, and after putting what I believed to be reasonable effort, I gave up. 😝 I may come back and try a few more of these later, but for now I am just happy that my work life is not compromised by frustratingly repetitive and obscurely-solved problems!

I visited an Apple store to ask about Mail problems. The man I spoke to did not, I think, really want to listen and told me the problem was with Yahoo with no answer concerning the same problem with many other providers.

Instead of a Gmail account I opened a Y7mail account which ended up IMAP rather than POP.

This new account is working as it should so have set my other account to forward all email to the new one, so at least I am getting them all.

Then I attempted to change the original account to IMAP with no luck so far and I can't find any help for this yet.

With all that done it now seems that mail will download from both accounts just once, after I first start my Mac.

Thereafter only the IMAP account works.

It is a little messy but not as messy as changing everything to do with my main account.

I hope this work-around will also work for others until the problem is fixed.

Unfortunately deleting the passwords in keychain did not work.

I'm lost once more as to what to try. I have no trouble logging into Yahoo mail from my Mac, my ipad or iphone.

I can read write and send emails as normal from Yahoo mail.

It seems that I can at least sometimes send from my POP account on Mail but cannot download emails from the Yahoo server onto my Mac.

I guess the next thing I can do when I feel brave enough is delete all reference on my Mac to the POP mail account and then set it up again.

It might reset something or reinvent itself as an IMAP account that works.

Apologies for being slow, but I'm stretching my abilities, and detailing my small steps may assist someone else.

I have found that for whatever reason POP had become turned off in my Yahoo POP account.

I have turned it on and now Mail is downloading my emails. May it last forever.

Here is the link to the Yahoo Help Page,

http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN3255&actp=search&viewlocale=en _AU&searchid=1368249801213&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

This is the important bit on the page.

First make sure POP is turned on for your Yahoo Mail Account. Then follow instructions.

On testing it several times there has been no request for a password and test emails have downloaded.

Note: when I went to delete my POP account prior to setting it up again, I was told that deleting the account would remove all messages and email with that address. I could not risk losing years of filed emails so I looked at Yahoo help about how to set up a POP account and maybe instructions to change it to IMAP.

Anyway, I hope I found a solution that lasts. There will be similar instructions for other providers.

My feeling is that because Mail is the only common denominator between all the different computers and mail providers, that there must be something in Mail or the Mac OS that is turning this setting off.

But I know so little, I may be completely wrong.

I hope this solution works for for others and keeps working for me.
