I am running OS X 10.6.8, Mail has stopped working.

I now get the Exclamation Mark in the Triangle for my InBox and if I try to send out an eMail I get the following message: "Mail was unable to connect to server “smtp.mail.me.com” using SSL on port 993. Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct." For the past few weeks I've had to log into icloud.com to receive and send eMail. Please help!!!!!! Thanks

Port 993 is for the incoming mail not SMTP.

You're running 10.6.8, yet you post to the Mountain Lion section.

There is currently an issue with the servers: http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

Could it be that I need to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

No.

Delete the mail account, making sure to delete the SMTP server settings too, and start over again:

Pay particular attention to the part about selecting IMAP over the default suggestion.

There was an issue with servers this morning, but it now appears to be okay. At least for me anyway.
