Q: IPhoto - looking for an inexpensive way to store my photos.

I recently moved my Iphoto library to my NAS drive due to space issues.  What I found out the hard way was that by moving the photos out of IPhoto, they won't stay in the same folders nor can I sort them according to date.  This left a giant mess of 10s of thousands of photos that I now have to go thru and sort manually.  By additional space on Iphoto seemed rather pricey at the time so I am hoping there is an alternative.

Also, I am hoping to find out if there is a way to delete duplicate photos.  Some how many of the photos duplicated themselves several times so I will have picture 1011, then copy 1011, copy 2 1011, etc.

Thanks to anyone who can provide some advice.

Give it up - he is a troll who does not use nor understand iPhoto and just loves to argue -

the key here is tha treaders understand that the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and if it is not they will have problems

Its just that simple - but trolls can't get it

As you don't use iPhoto you'd hardly know that iPhoto and Aperture use the same Library. For a guy who doesn’t use it you sure do argue about it a lot.

I am not a troll. You made a statement. I ask where is the documentation for that statement. I am testing that statement and posting the results I am getting.

Which that testing is proving your statement incorrect. Then you turn to name calling. Very big of you.

Have you tested that statement? Do you have any other document that was written more recently showing that the newer database used by both the i image programs still can't be put on a shared network resource?

OKay, so here we have a giu who doesn't use iPhoto at all. Doesn't understand it, and heaven only knows why he's answering questions about it. But he's not a troll, so that's okay. In response we have some of the most experiened posters in the iPhoto and Aperture fora. We have nothing to gain from misdirecting people, nothing to gain from posting incorrect information.

Search the forums on both apps. See the posts from people who have their libraries stored on devices not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). See how they solve their problems by moving to an appropriately formatted disk.

People have run iPhoto and Aperture libraries from NAS devices for a while - sometimes a long while. But problems do arise, inevitably. And the solution is the same - run the Library from a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

That article may be three years old but it doesn't need to be updated as nothing has changed.

And those problem would never crop up otherwise? It seems to me people in general have problems with both iphoto and aperture whether or not the library is store on the internal or an external even if formatted Mac extended.

Otherwise there would never be any posts about corrupted or missing iphoto and aperture libraries and no need for a system to rebuild the library database. Wouldn't you think?

And you wonder why we think you are a troll? Really. Why not change the sunject entirely. That's such an asinine comment it's beyond belief.

Well I think your comments to me are asinine without even testing it yourself.

Sorry to go against what you perceive to be facts. But that is really what I expected. Your words are like those from GOD, they Must Be Obeyed. Otherwise someone is a Troll.

    Thanks but No thank you.

The developer says it. The experienced users say it. The evidence on the forum and on other sites say it. One guy doesn't. He hates iPhoto. He doesn’t use it. But he keeps turning up in threads arguing about it. Go figure.

No were did I ever say I hated iPhoto. I said I don't use it as I use something else. I am not arguing. You are doing that.

    Yeah Go Figure.

NAS servers do not address file access permissions and ownership the same as OS X and creates access problems as time goes on.

One should not try to operate an iPhoto Library from a NAS drive or a drive formatted FAT.

    Larry, TD:

This troll has been discussed at great length in the Lounge.  This isn't the only forum he's give bad info in.  Just ignore him and if you run into him in another topic post a disclaimer to the OP that he is a troll and his advice should not be given any credence.
