iPhone 4s + iTunes connection problem

What can I do to connect my iPhone 4s with iTunes again, as I have not been able to update via USB for a couple of months? I've followed the instructions on the Apple site with no success. My iPad is working fine but not my phone on either my iMac or Macbook Pro.
