Headphones stop working in garageband with plug-in mic

I plug in a Tascam iM2x mic to my ipad in garageband and can no longer hear anything through the headphones (regardless of whether the Monitor switch is on or off). Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks very much for any help - much appreciated. G
