There are many online apps can do the video conversion for your, such as zamzar, Acethinker Video Converter, mediaconverter, etc. They are totally free, and you don't have to download or install anything. You just need to import your M4V video into the app, select AVI as output format, run the conversion, that's all.
These days even Windows accepts m4v or mp4 files however consider using AviDemux. This can re-encode video and/or audio files to different codecs, but can also convert audio/video tracks to different 'wrappers' without needing to re-encode.
If you can avoid re-encoding the audio and/or video then you can do the simpler quicker file wrapper conversion quicker and avoid the slight downgrade of audio/video quality that occurs when re-encoding.
It depends on the individual situation whether it is necessary i.e. better to re-encode as well.
AviDemux being Java will work on Mac as well as Windows.
Note: In theory VLC can do the same thing - that is either change the wrapper or re-encode but my experience is that VLC is extremely poor i.e. unreliable at doing this.
This converts a ton of stuff. I use it all the time.
Thanks. Basically, i created a short movie on iMovie (m4v).
I need to send it to apply for a job. I guess they will have a PC, not a Mac, so would like to make sure they can watch the video. Do you think i should convert in .mov or .avi ?
Thanks a lot
Go for .avi or .mpeg. Both should play nicely on a PC. I don't believe .mov runs on a PC so don't convert it to .mov.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING! Here's what you do. Open the AVI file with QuickTime Player. Then go to SAVE AS. Then, name your file and be sure to save it as MOVIE. I did iPhone since I don't think it matters. It will automatically save as an M4V file! Yay!
Try these free online ones:

My favorite tool for video conversion is Handbrake. It is an amazing program with some useful presets and lots of flexibility. It used to to do AVI but may have stopped as it is such an old format.
Another that definitely does AVI is avidemux, available for PC and Mac. Not very user friendly but effective.
