I tried to remove Spotify from the dock. It left a "?" greyed out. Can't get rid of it. I also cannot add the new Spotify icon to the dock. The dock won't let anything in or out.
Can you open Terminal and type killall Dock, and then see if you can drag it off?
Unfortunately, that did not help. I saw it take effect, but still can't remove the "?" or drag the Spotify icon to the dock.
FYI, I can't move anything on or off the dock. It's not just Spotify. Just to clarify.

What a predicament! Have you restarted since this happened?
I have restarted. I can survive without this being resolved, it's just inconvenience. I'll end up keeping icons on my desktop instead.

Have you installed any third-party programs recently?

Right click on the icon in the dock, uncheck Keep in Dock.
I have not.
There are no options when I right click on icon. I tried that first.
And you have tried dragging it out of the dock (at least 2 inches away from the dock)?
?-mark is an icon that was a shortcut to a program that you've removed, so the shortcut has nothing to point to.
Anyway, just drag it off the dock onto the desktop and it will disappear.
Yes, dragged it all over the desktop. Does not budge.
The last thing installed on the dock was the Verizon Media Manager. It wouldn't surprise me if something from Verizon is the culprit.
FYI, somehow this was unchecked. I checked the box and restarted. Fixed the problem.
