Q: HELP! Matching audio in FCP7. Project is finished except for this tiny problem and its killing me!

I am in dire need of some help.

I have a project with the audio from an interview running throughout it. 99% of the interview was recorded with a lapel mic attached to the guys jumper. However, during the edit a few days later, I realised I wanted one more quote and asked him to record it on a dictaphone and email it to me. However, the two clips sound completely different. The main reason for this im sure is that the lapel mic was further away from his mouth than the dictaphone, creating a completely different sound quality. How would I go about matching these?! Is there some sort of audio filter? HELP!

I doubt that the distance from the two microphones is making the difference you're hearing.  More likely is that the two mics are designed differently; the Dictaphone mic is made very inexpensively and has a very limited frequency (tonality) range when compared to the lapel mic.  Add to that is the fact that the recordings were made in two different places, each having their own unique "sound" and background noise.

Try playing around with an EQ filter, either in FCP, SoundTrack Pro or other audio editing app to see if you can get the Dictaphone's frequencies to more closely match that of the lapel mic.  Chances are they will never match completely but if you're persistent, you may get close.
