Wont recognize my Panasonic GS50

Hi, I have tried everything I can find to get imovie to import from my Panasonic GS50.
It has a firewire output, it is in SP, I turned on and off everything, rebooted, tried different firewire inputs, have the cam on vcr, reset the time and date on the cam.... everything.

Imovie still says a camera is not connected.

Any new ideas anyone? Thanks in advance, CJT

...Might you be referring to the Panasonic PV-GS500?? If so, I can assure you that it should work. I have this camera and it works flawlessly on my iMac.

Make sure you've purchase the correct fire-wire cable (called a DV cable). I've read that this is crucial. I'm not sure of the model no., but I'm using a Belkin that is quite thick, with a shiny braided cover. I believe that the packaging specifically identified the cable for use with camcorder.

Also, try visiting these two websites for info

www.pana3ccduser.com
www.camcorderinfo.com (go to Panasonic user forum).

It's a great camcorder, you'll be happy with the results once you figured this problem out.

good luck.

Or try different software.
I have yet to find a way to get iMovie to recognise my Panasonic DV camera, including all the troubleshooting guides mentioned in this thread and more.... this is despite the fact that every other piece of video-capable software on my Mac Mini has no problems at all with my camera.
Try HyperEngine-AV http://www.arboretum.com/products/hyperengine-av/hav_main.html which is free software to see if the problem is with your video setup or with iMovie.
Personally I have given up on iMovie

Try another Mac.
Try another cable.
Try another FW device on the Mac (hard drive, burner,
scanner...).

I quote QuickTimeKirk:
”Open the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities folder).
Try changing the settings to 44100Hz (CD Quality) or to 48000Hz (typical of the iMovie formats).
Others call this the GarageBand fix. Opening GB also resets the Audio MIDI Setup.”

If that didn't make sense, try this:

*Open GarageBand
*Play a few notes
*Close Garageband
*Open imovie
*Camera should be recognized now.

Where is your Firewire lead plugged inio your Mac ? Try and use Mac with NO other Firewire units attached. This means you will need to run iMovie on internal HD,

Try an earlier version of iMovie. When I try to use my Handycam DV camera as a interface between a DV player or a VCR to the eMac, I can only get iMovie 3.0.3 to do this, later versions "drop out".

Please don't give up. iMovie and MAC are far ahead on producing home DCDs

Just my 2 cents..

I need to clarify: when you said resetting date/time, did you mean that you actually pushed a reset button on the camcorder? The reason I'm asking is that I had a faulty (bent connector pin) brandnew FireWire cable and my Panasonic PV GS36 was not recognized by neither iMovie nor System Profiler. Replaced the cable with the same "not recognized" result. Followed instructions to reset the unit (removed tape, etc) and it was recognized by iMovie and System Profiler.

Good luck.

"..resetting date/time.."

This is done by choosing it from a menu in the camcorder. It's vital that the date and time are set (..even if not accurately!..) as camcorders get, or present, their info about individual clips from the differences in date and time between clips.

If the date/time clock is NOT set in a camcorder (..because it's been standing for several months, and the internal clock battery has discharged..) then the camera doesn't "stamp" each shot with a separate time-stamp. Then, when importing into iMovie, clips aren't correctly separated, but everything just imports as one long clip!

Hi...
I reset the time per the instructions on the Apple troubleshooting page by manually trying to get it exactly the same as my comp time, and then by removing the backup battery and putting it back in to try to get it to automatically reset to the right time. Didnt work, but I guess for some problems it does help the comp to recognize the camera. aloha, C
