random email attached to mail

I just sent an email to someone - it was a brand new email not a reply. It had four attachments (screenshots) which I dragged into the mail from the desktop, When I looked at what I'd sent I saw that it had a second mail attached to the bottom of it, one that I had sent to someone else months ago. Why has this happened? Could be very awkward 😟 Now I'm worried that whatever I send will have some random second email attached...

I'm using 10.8.3 and Mail 6.3

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

seems like it is a common problem with mac osx you should sleep and wake the machine to see if your problem is solved or not here is a similar problem people are facing

From your further explanations it sounds like your system sent two separate emails. This is what I think you have said:

You sent one email that you meant to send and it had an attachment you meant to attach.
An additional email got sent. We don't know why. It is a random email from December that got forwarded to the same recipient as the email you meant to send. And it is being arranged or colored in the list of emails as if it is related to the one you meant to send.

Is that correct?

I can't think of a way this could have happened. I'm just trying to nail down the problem so that when someone else comes around they'll know what the problem was.

Hi Thanks for your reply. Those issues in the link seem to be about dragging and dropping - or not being able to. I wasn't aware that mine was about that specifically - the mail that appeared at the bottom of my email wasn't on the desktop so I hadn't attached it by mistake it just appeared from nowhere.

The problem(s) in that thread are completely different than what was mentioned here, at least from my quick scan through the 16 pages. And most of the problems were due to the installation of third party apps.

If the message was listed in the email window, it could have been accidentally added as an attachment. It did not have to be on the desktop. I'd just keep an eye on it to see if it happens again.

Hi thanks for the reply.

The thing is it wasn't an attachment in the first email it was a separate email - that's what caught my attention as it said 2 in the top right corner of the email and I knew there shouldn't be 2, only 1 so I scrolled down and saw the 2nd completely separate email that had absolutely nothing to do with what I was sending. But somehow it was in a link with the one I just sent as if it was a reply or linked message except that it was a brand new email.

If you create a new email then drag and drop an email message from your inbox (i.e., from the list of email messages in your inbox), just like dragging in an attachment, it should make an attachment that looks like an envelope. Is that what it you are talking about?

Well no not really. I got a new email window up with the address of who I wanted to send to. Wrote my email, added attachments and sent.

Then I looked in the sent folder (don't know why) clicked on what I sent and saw it said 2 and that the random email from December was a second email in the same thread so the recipient will now be wondering why I sent that to them.

Hi,

I think so. Not sure about the arranged or coloured bit. It is related to the one I meant to send in as much as it is in the same 'thread' or window by which I mean when I view the email I sent today in Mail, I view the email '2' with attachments and todays date and then after that message, there is email '1' as if it was a previous email to the same person except that this email message has nothing to do with the one I sent today and I still have no clue how it got there.

Do you know what was received? Was the old one from December also received?

I ask because the problem might be one of how the sent email is being displayed, in the Sent mailbox, rather than what was actually sent.

I have been thinking the same thing that hopefully it was not actually sent but is more a problem with what it shows has been sent from my sent folder. I can't ask what was received - it was just an eBay support query so I expect it is lost in the ether. Not too worried about that, just concerned that it if it was sent then it might happen again and next time it might be more of a problem. But like you say, I'm leaning towards it being a display error. In one of my accounts in Mail (different one to today's problem) it often says the same email has been sent twice so I think 'oh no they must think I'm an idiot', or alternatively, it won't actually say it's gone at all so I'll have no proof that it's been sent, and yet it has been.
