- I started it for the first time on my new macbook pro, running OS X 10.8.3, it imported and upgraded the iPhoto database, but now "Quit iPhoto" is greyed out and I can't get it to close. I can't find an open dialog box anywhere. I hate to force quit, for fear of damaging the database and making my photos inaccessible. Am I missing some trick here?

No sometines things happen and you have to force quit - hopefully you will not damage things but it is possible - which is why you always have a good backup "because things happen"

Oddly enough, I decided to try "Close this window", and it appeared to quit the app. very strange. I have a backup, I just didn't want to hammer the database and have to restore it if I didn't have to.

If the graphical user interface is unresponsive, you can quite often quit an application by sending the "Term" signal (software termination signal) from the Terminal instead, and this way avoid to "Force Quit".
Simply open a Terminal window and type
killall iPhoto
