Early 2009 24" iMac CONTINUALLY crashes...

The system freezes and/or restarts at least once a day as well (usually more like 3-10x), seems to be worst in Safari, but also happens on waking from sleep and anything that is graphic-related (I almost typed graphic-heavy, but even small graphic files/sites/apps that have previously not posed any problem suddenly are), or now also video--whether it is flash/html5 viewed directly online or video files played from the hard drive. Any ONE of these things is enough to either slow the system to a crawl (like a 2-page InDesign document or loading FaceBook timeline--small things that should not be problem weighing the system down) or causing automatic restart or system-wide freeze for which the only solution is to hold the power button and do a hard reboot.

While there were issues before installing Mountain Lion (a clean install, btw, specifically to try to eradicate this problem), it seems no better and progressively worse since the upgrade.

Besides the clean install, here's what I've tried:
-MacKeeper clean

-PRAM reset

-freeing up hard disk space (there is 275GB free on a 640 drive)

-reboot in safe mode

-shut down and unplug all peripherals and power, reboot

-using fewer programs (I work in graphic design, so I almost ALWAYS need Safari, Mail, InDesign, and usually Photoshop open. A lot, I know, but they aren't large files, and it's an almighty MAC after all, it should be fine--and forget about iTunes or iPhoto, opening them almost always causes a crash too... so no music while I work, at least not from iTunes)

Apple care ran out on this machine nearly a year ago, but really, these things should be more robust than a 4-year use-life...

I am not a computer tech, nor do I have the time or interest to pick apart panic logs to figure out what it all means. I just want it to work. Wasn't that Apple's motto for a while, "It just works"? Hmmm... not right. I should not have to either learn how to be a Genius or haul my 24" iMac to the nearest retail store AND pay for the repairs (if any) on a machine that is only 3.5 years old. That's ridiculous. That can't be my only 2 choices.

Anyway, here are 2 of the crash logs, one from today, and one from a couple days ago:

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can pick them apart and find the possible cause(s)

Hi there, im sure you wrote the solution a while ago, but do you remember what exactly you downloaded and installed to fix the problem please? Im on imac early 2009 24", nvidia ge force 130 512mb, and having same issues exactly. I can install cuda drivers 7.0 onwards, not 8, but still crashing! What is the other link you had that doesnt open now? Do i need to install something else? Many thanks- much appreciated!

I see you have attempted to use MacKeeper. A very bad decision and likely to be the cause of your problems.

Many users will see references to an application called MacKeeper on various web sites and via pop-ups on their browser. Not only is it expensive for what it purports to do (freeware applications that do the same or more are readily available), it can sometimes install itself without the user realising it, and it can be very tricky to get rid of.

Most positive reviews of it have been found to have been paid for by Zeobit (developers of MacKeeper) in the form of ‘free upgrades’ etc. For example (posted by fellow contributor Softwater), on their Facebook page and on their webpage they have this apparent endorsement from UNC Charlotte:

https://discussions.apple.com/content/attachment/125157040

Softwater contacted the Director of IT at the College of Arts and Architecture UNC Charlotte, about whether they endorse MacKeeper and his response, quoted here, was:

No, please do not download and install MacKeeper. We have seen problems with this software in the past.

MacKeeper has been described by various sources as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system, adding that it is unethically marketed, with a history of making false advertising claims, by a company called Zeobit and a rip-off.

For more details about Zeobit’s alledgedly fraudulent advertising and paid-for ‘reviews’, and their dubious marketing practises, read this:

http://stemmings.com/the-truth-about-mackeeper-scam/

Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware can be read here:

http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/

MacKeeper have recently said that the uninstaller from here:

http://applehelpwriter.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malwa re/

now works.

This is also worth reading:

http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=245

Equally phoney was iAntivirus:

http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=341

until it was purchased recently (May 2012) by Symantic (makers of Norton anti-virus which does not work well with Apple OS X). Even after having tinkered with it, iAntivirus still fails to do the job properly and cannot be recommended.

There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X and there is therefore no reason to run anti-virus software on a Mac, but a Mac, like all computers, can transmit viruses and malware to other users particularly those running Windows. Note, however, that Trojans are another matter and can represent a genuine threat, an example of which was the recent 'Flashback Trojan' which you can read more about here:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3261

For further information you may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435

The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer some guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

* The expression ‘malware’ is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software.

Apr 24, 2013 11:02 AM in response to MichelPM

MacKeeper is not the CAUSE of my problems, I am certain. I instaled it BECAUSE I was having problems.

But, I guess it's possible that the problems are WORSE now because of it tho... I'll try uninstalling it, since I paid for it, Ican easily reinstall it if I need to... or if getting rid of it solves the problem, I'll get my money back!

Thanks for the input, I'll try it out and post the result 🙂

Apr 24, 2013 11:16 AM in response to MBD999

Mackeeper is malware masquerading as legitimately working software.

Among all experienced Mac users here, it is a well known, well worn fact that this software is "crapware".!

This software is known to corrupt perfectly running Mac systems.l

MacKeeper is seriously flawed software!

You wasted your money on this! Once you have completely uninstalled this software, DO NOT REINSTALL THIS EVER! AGAIN!

Mackeeper will not cure your Mac ills, only make them appreciably worse.

You should consider and apprecite the experience of users here who help out of their own valuable time.

😉

Apr 24, 2013 11:20 AM in response to MichelPM

I do appreciate the input from the users here who are trying to help. I have uninstalled it, and I'll see if the problems persist.

However, since I had MEGA problems BEFORE I ever installed it, I'm skeptical as to whether it will solve ALL of my Mac ills. Time will tell, and I will post the results.

Thank you for your input.

net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.0.5

com.StreamOutputser.chaoyueme 1

com.displaylink.driver.DisplayLinkDriver 2.0

It's highly likely that CrapKeeper MacKeeper is the cause of your problems, but I would also suggest removing these items as well, according to the developers instructions.

With kernel panics a good starting point is to remove all the non-Apple stuff and test.

Apr 24, 2013 11:22 AM in response to MBD999

Also, I'll ask a few more questions that might be some of your issues.

How much RAM installed in your iMac?

How much free space is left on your internal hard drive?

How many applications do,you leave up and running in the background while performing another task in another application?

Your system info indicates you are on OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

You may want to consider updating to OS X 10.6.8.

Apr 24, 2013 11:42 AM in response to MichelPM

4GB RAM

275GB free on a 640GB internal drive

I usually have Mail, Safari, InDesign, and Photoshop open whenever I'm on, I'm mostly using it for design, so Mail is running to correspond with colleaugues and clients, Safari for research, and ID and Ps for the actual work. It will crash with *just* Mail and Safari running. There was a time when I'd also keep iTunes, iPhoto, and one or 2 others open, but those days are over. I've severely limit the other programs I use (sometimes I have to do text or web work as well, but I try not to keep ID open when doing web, or Ps open when I do text...)
Says OSX 10.8.3 when I open the info dialog box

Thanks for your help. (now that MacKeeper is removed, I'm *trying* to make it crash, one process at a time... tho it is often sporadic, so I may not get a crash right away... fingers crossed!)

Apr 24, 2013 11:52 AM in response to Paul_31

Ya, I'm looking for them... the first two I can't seem to find, Display link isn't the cause (although it too may be contributing, so I'll try uninstalling it temporarily)

Display link is for a third monitor I am running (a Wacom Cintiq). Again, though, I've had the second monitor (using minidisplay port) forever w/o problems, the third one only 2 weeks, and the crashes were happening well before I added the third one.

Apr 24, 2013 11:58 AM in response to MBD999

As you are, probably, keenly aware ( as a designer) Adobe apps, alone are serious CPU and RAM memory hogs.

OS X, usually for itself, needs between 2-4 GBs for it to run smoothly, quickly and efficiently.

This doesn't leave much or no physical RAM for the Adobe apps (or any other apps), to do its work properly.

Without sufficient physical RAM resources, RAM related tasks get shuttled to the hard drive where the hard drive becomes the RAM worker. A spinning hard drives runs much slower than actual RAM and this is where your iMac maybe slowing down.

Your iMac model can take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.

I would recommend purchasing the max. amount of RAM.

Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

This will help your iMac system considerably!

Good Luck!

Apr 24, 2013 12:21 PM in response to MichelPM

Yes, you're right, and I do realize that. it's funny, when I had ordered the machine (by phone through Apple) I was interested in 8GB, and the rep actually talked me OUT of getting 8GB, saying that 4GB was LOTS, even for Adobe apps. I guess, in 2009, 4GB seemed plentiful, much like 1TB seemed excessive at one time, and now it's a bare minimum...

I have looked into upgrading the RAM to 8GB tho, but I also plan to purchase a new Mac soon... so I don't want to invest too much (I know, RAM is not that exensive) if the cause is elsewhere. The new one will have the max RAM possible!

Apr 24, 2013 1:20 PM in response to MBD999

Which 2009 CPU model do you have?

I have the late 2009 3.06Ghz CPU model with 16 GBs of RAM and my iMac runs Adobe CS3 with no issues.

I, usually, only have one Adobe app at a time open unless I am going between apps in InDesign.

If I am doing a lot of desicated work in either Illustrator or Photoshop, I run these alone with Apple Mail and Safari running in the background.

I bought this iMac used a year, ago, and has been working great for me.

Everything still works and just had my hard drive replaced under Apple recall program.

So, I have a brand new hard drive in my iMac that I won't (hopefully) have to worry about for awhile.

If your iMac has enough RAM and hard drive space, everything tends to work much better than when your on the edge of needing more RAM or Hd space.

Good Luck!

😉.

Apr 24, 2013 2:06 PM in response to MichelPM

It's a

2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I'll get more RAM, I'm sure it'll help... crashed again a couple times today before I could look for those processes (again, just Safari and Mail open)
Can't find the processes you mentioned earlier, I'm not sure where to search... spotlight is useless, and user files aren't showing anything so far...

If it helps, here's the latest crash report:
