Q: Mac Mini Screensaver Won't Start

I have two Mac minis serving as basic media displays. One is set with an automator action to start the screensaver immediately after starting up. It also has hot corners enabled and is set to go to screensaver after 1 min should something porentially pop up. The other is set to automatically repeat a VLC playlist on full screen upon login. They're both running 10.8.2.

Both are attached to TVs without and are scheduled to turn on automatically on weekdays using the energy saver feature at 7 AM and go to bed at 7 PM. There are no devices attached, so no mouse, no keyboard, nothing except the power cord and an HDMI connecting to the TV. They automatically connect to an Internal network that's always on and doesn't have outside Internet access. I've disabled automatic updates, time/date sync, automatic Bluetooth detection (since there are no keyboards, etc attached) to prevent any kind of pop-up or notification.

In theory, they work like a charm. When you start the machine manually, respectively, the screensaver and playlist work flawlessly without any issues.

However, the problem rears it's ugly head when the machine wakes up automatically. For the screensaver one, it hangs on the desktop and the screensaver won't start unless you click it automatically. If you restart the machine or shut it down and turn it on, it works fine. It only messes up when the alarm wakes it.

Video does something related. When waking automatically, video starts playback, but at some point in the first 30 min to hour of playback, it pauses. If you put in a mouse, you can click play and it continues on without pausing again. If you restart the machine or shut down and turn on again, no issue.

HELP???

Hi, a real tough one, but...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Also, open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem for clues.

Thanks for the reply and pondering this issue.

I have tried the PRAM a while ago and, while that seemed to solve the issue, a few days later, it was back to doing what it was before.

I've checked the console log before, but I cannot for the life of me figure out which of the items is causing the problem, if any.

I'm running the video player right now and, when it freezes next, I'll paste the console from wake to freeze and see if you can spot anything.

    Thank you again!

    Logged posted at the bottom.

I set the screensaver to go to sleep automatically at 4:42 and wake up at 5. With the automatic sleep, it gives 10 minutes, so it went to sleep at 4:52 and woke up 8 minutes later, at 5. Within the first 2 minutes, the video froze. I am not sure if how or why any of the issues logged could have caused that.

Based on when the video froze, the only real culprit could be this one:

4/25/13 5:01:02.471 PM imagent[146]: [Warning] Bag loading failed! Error (NSURLErrorDomain:-1001): The request timed out. http://init.ess.apple.com/WebObjects/VCInit.woa/wa/getBag?ix=1

But that's essentially trying to establish a connection to Apple, so I don't see why that would cause a VLC video to freeze...

What's even weirder is it seems to happen ONLY under these circumstances: Computer AUTOMATICALLY goes to sleep, computer AUTOMATICALLY wakes up. If I put the computer down myself, and it starts automatically, no issues. If I let it shut down automatically and turn it on myself, no issues. Bizarre, no?

It's connecting using WIFI to that network LCDTV, but that doesn't have an Internet connection. Every other connection type is dsiabled.

What could I do to solve any of those errors or issues? Could any of them be causing this?

I believe I followed your instructions, but just tested and it still seems to be having the same issue with the video pausing after the first few minutes after an automatic wake up.

Sorry, I'm at a loss, checked 10.8.x last night to see if I could tell what might be doing it, but no clues.
