Hi
I've just put a SSD into my Macbook Pro (early 2011) and switched it on holding command + R which I thought would take me to an option to download an instal image for Mountain Lion, but I keep getting the folder with question mark icon
What should I try next?

A blank drive, is a blank drive, is a blank drive.
If your Macbook shipped with anything less than Lion, you need to use the disc it shipped with to boot from and use Disk Utility.
I think it shipped with Lion, but no disks. When I was in the apple store early a member of staff mentioned that I could just put the new drive in and something would be remembered in the firmware to allow me to download and install Mountain Lion. Is this not correct?
So, how do i go about installing ML? I have access to my old drive??

Thanks for the link... I plugged in my old drive via a usb enclosure, booted from that, erased the new drive and I'm now installing Mountain Lion on the new drive.
