It's called PRE-AUTHORIZATION people haha! I'm sure many of us have had this same issue with, say, for example: Your debit card has $28.47, you get gas, and you can slide your card through, and pump tip you're full. However. . . a few days later, the bank, your account? Eh not so happy about it ; )

The OP has been answered so I find it irrelevant to give out the step-by-step here XD

Yes iTunes does let you download a purchase without charging your card for that particular purchase. What iTunes does is to hold off charging the card if the purchase is small ... like 99¢ or $1.99. It holds off charging while letting you download ... obviously operating under the assumption that if you're buying one now, you may also buy another one, two or three in the next day or two. The longest I've seen iTunes hold off charging the card is about three days. iTunes does that in order to group a series of purchases under just "one charge"

ok. so not sure if this has been clarified, to many coments to read, but you can owe apple money, and buy stuff without having the funds in your account, i have bought many in-app purchases without having the money on my card, and now i owe apple the money beore i can make any more purchases, even free apps i can't get until this amount is paid off. so in that case, you can still buy games and apps, without the available funds in your card, you just have to pay them off.

If you owe money to iTunes, you must pay it off in full before you can download

    updates or free apps.

I beg to differ. I received this message from iTunes. "The billing of a previous purchase has failed because your credit card was declined. P[lease provide valid credit card information and click Done to pay your outstanding balance and continue using the store" Proof that you can owe iTunes money.Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 8.46.54 AM.png

Can you fix what you owe using an iTunes gift card?

Not true. You CAN owe money on your account, if your payment method (ie credit or debit card on file) is declined. Apple just puts it through, and then if it's declined, you still get the item you bought, but you won't be able to buy anything else OR download updates until you pay your balance.
