I can receive emails but not send. I tried deleting the account and adding it back, but now I cannot even access my inbox in Mail. I can check my email directly through Google just fine. Advice?

Settings are correct. It keeps asking me to re-enter the password when I take my gmail account online. My password and account information are correct. I am able to log in on the google website.
And you are sure that all settings are correct, ports and security especially.
Open connection doctor, run it (with details on) and post the result here (obscure any email addresses that appear)
One more thing, when I select my outgoing server in preferences it says "Server Name"(Offline). Will post results connection doctor results shortly.
I'm not sure im comfortable posting the results because I don't know much about the information displayed. I have several email accounts and it displays the results for all of them over several pages. My gmail incoming servers get a green light, except for one, but they all have red lights for outgoing server.
What are the messages associated with the SMTP server (I can only help if I know what the problem is)

Sounds like you are using two step verification for your Google account. If so, your gmail password will not work with Apple Mail. You must generate an application specific password for Apple Mail on the Gmail site.

Are you using Googles 2 part authentification?
2 part authentification was the problem. I feel like an idiot, but thank y'all so much for the help.

I also want to thank you folks for your help. I have also spent a couple weeks trying to find the right answer to this problem. My Mail app lost the ability to connect right after I installed the OS 10.8.3 update and a day of Google mail server problems on their end. Simply generating a new application specific password did the trick. Why the old app-specific password went bonkers, I don't know.
What a relief!

I am using Gmail 2 factor authentication
I type in the application-specific password
there is no place to check "save in my keychain"
I type the application-specifc password in the actual Mail-->Preferences-->Accounts section for both incoming and outgoing
then it works the entire time I have Mail open
but once I shut the Mail app and re-open it stops working
Mac Mail will not connect with Gmail, advice?
