Find the computer's serial number, append the last three characters of it to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= , load the page, and then check exactly what Mac model it is and what OS it shipped with.

If it's Mac OS X 10.6.2 or earlier, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store or see below.

If it's Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, phone AppleCare and order replacement original disks. This will require the computer's full serial number. Doing this will also get you iLife, which isn't on the retail DVD.

If it's Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart it with the Command and R keys held down and use the preloaded recovery partition.
