Hi,I have an iphone 3gs & want to put Facebook & Candy sugar crush on the iphone but they keep saying I need to update my firmware.
When I try & do this in iTunes it tells me I have 4.2.1 but does not offer a higher firmware :-/
It tell's me in iTunes my Firmware is up to date but how can it be or am I doing something wrong.

You may be mixing up IOS version and Firmware Version. When you go to "About" in your iPhone's General Setting, what does it list for "Version" and then further down "Modem Firmware"?
Also, please inform us what platform computer you sync your phone with, what operating system it's running and what iTunes version.
Most likely because you DON'T have an iPhone 3GS. Read here to identify what model you do have:

Bought the phone off ebay & so may just return it.
A 3g should still be able to play a silly game like candy crush & let me on Facebook should it not.
No. The 3G reached end of life with iOS 4.2.1. If an app requires a higher version, then it won't run. There is nothing you can do about it. Anything higher than 4.2.1 requires a 3GS or higher.
Yes, sounds like you have a 3G... the last iOS for that model is 4.2.1. You're just asking for trouble buying an iPhone off eBay.
I'm guessing apple do this to force you to buy a newer version :-(
No. They do it because the 5 year old phone you have, which was discontinued nearly 3 years ago, is not physically capable of running anything higher than 4.2.1.
Whether or not an app will run on that version of iOS is completely up to the app developers.
Why can't I update my 3gs from 4.2.1 ?
