Q: I got a new wireless modem. The HP 8600 no longer works and is not seen as an airport printer. The diagnostics on the printer say it is connected to the wireless.

Suddenly no wireless printing works. The printer is a HP 8600e and the wireless is turned on and the printer itself can connect to the network, but OSX no longer sees it as an airport printer and nothing prints. I've tried all the Apple support docs without success.

Also, trying to set up the printer under the IP address gives "Unable to connect to 'IP address' due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?

'IP address' is the correct address for our wireless

Do you mean that 'IP address is the address of your printer?

I uninstalled the entire printer software. I then tried to download the software, and it gave me the incompatible with OSX 10.8 message and aborted the uninstall. I turned off and back on the printer and rebooted the Macbook Pro. I made sure that the printer touchscreen setup enabled wireless and did the diagnostics to make sure it was connected. I tried to add the printer by searching, and it was not found. I tried setting up the printer based on the IP address and selected the driver in System Preferences. None of these worked. I downloaded the driver again, this time from Apple's site (which has the same file name and version). I used a USB connection to the printer, and can print through this. I tried to add the wireless printer as a second printer, and it could not be found. So I can print again as long as the printer is connected through the USB cord.

Do a reset of the printer and reboot the Mac, then try again.

The driver is clearly correct so that only leaves the connection.

An old addage of troubleshooting is "First, fix what you most recently changed."

All the driver uninstall etc, was probably unnecessary.

Power cycle the router (wireless modem).

    Power cycle the printer.

Now check that the printer is in the local subnet of the router.

(local subnet means router is something like 192.168.1.1, your computer is something like 192.168.1.2, and the printer is something like 192.168.1.3 - only the last part - 192.168.1.x - is allowed to be different).

Add the printer using the default printer browser window.

If this doesn't work, Reset Printing system and re-add.

Reset, reboots did not help. The printer says it is connected to the wireless but the computer cannot find it. So after doing troubleshooting for what recently changed without success, I followed the support request to delete the printer and put it back on. As mentioned, it still does not work. I did the network "assist me" troubleshooting and no issues were found.

I got the IP address off the printer itself (and have wireless on and wireless direct on. When I try to set up the printer as an IP address printer, it gives the error message "unable to verify the printer on your network. Unable to connect to 'IP" due to an error. Would you like to create the printer? (where IP is the actual IP address). I tried all three options below the IP address without success.

What is the IP address of the printer, and your Mac?

Also, enable bonjour is on. The IP address of the printer is ###.###.#.8 and the Mac is ###.###.#.5

The Bonjour Domain Name is HPCC1143 and highest priority service is LPD.

    The full address please.

I'll take a guess, they both start 192.168, then probably 0 or 1, am I in the ballpark here (there are no secrets here, thise addresses are shared by the bulk of the nation, they don't identify anything)

The first 3 groups must be identical, are they?

OK, the computer is 192.168.1.5 and the printer is 192.168.1.8

Of note, it is not just the Macbook pro that cannot find the printer, but neither can two iphones and an ipad.

Also, all permissions and hard drive diagnostics are ok.

So they are in the same subnet. Find the printer manual and find the steps to perform a complete (factory) reset, usually it's a key/number combination on the printer itself, but HP like to keep everyone on their toes, so it differs from model to model.

Before you do that can you ping the IP address of the printer and get a reply?

I called AppleCare and they went through all the steps again without success and gave me HP tech support's number. Fortunately, the sixth time was the charm. Before calling HP (which I was dreading, since they are not reponsive like Apple) I unplugged and replugged in the power cords to the router, wireless modem, and printer and the wireless printer showed up. Everything is working. Thank you all for your suggestions.
