It sounds like your Mac doesn't have a Recovery HD and is trying to do an internet recovery. Have a look here for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Before continuing, did your Mac originally come with two grey disks? If so, you could try using disk 1 (the restore OS disk) to boot the Mac and run the same disk check via Disk Utility. If you have the disk put it in the drive and restart whilst holding down the C key and hopefully it'll boot from the optical drive. At the first screen choose your language and from the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Run the repairs and previously described and then try to restart.
