Make sure push in enabled on your iPad:

    • From the Home screen, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Fetch New Data. Make sure the Push slider is set to On.
    • From the Home screen, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Fetch New Data > Advanced, tap your iCloud account, make sure Push is enabled in "Select schedule."

Thank you randers4. I had already done this but it makes no difference. Perhaps I have too many devices receiving mail which includes outlook, iPhone, iPod and iPad.

Do you have more than one iCloud account on your iPad?  If so, only the primary account (in Settings>iCloud) will receive push email.  Secondary accounts (in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars) receive fetch email.

If that's not the problem, there are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try on your iPad in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4002.

Thanks. I only have one mail account. Interestingly your emails are coming through immediately but emails from other external sources are considerably delayed.

I will look further into the problem from your web link. Thank you.

You're welcome.  I'm not sure why there would be a significant delay between your devices if they are using the same internet connection (such as your wifi).  Mine are usually separated by only seconds.
