Q: When using lightning to SD reader w/ ipad mini get "This accessory is not supported" message. REbooting doesn't help. What next?

The lightning to SD reader doesn't work correctly. I get "This accessory is not supoted by ipad" message. If I use a lightning/30 pin adaptor and the old apple SD reader I can download photos from SD card to my ipad mini. I have read that re-booting my ipad will help, but it doesn't. I have also tried different SD cards.

Any advice isappreciated.

Apple support will tell you that if a reboot doesn't work, then the next step is restore. Restore the iPad to the factory settings and then either set it up again as a new iOS device or restore it a 2nd time from a backup. Restoring from the backup could ressurect this same issue again.

BTW, what steps are you using to reboot?

To  reboot: the first time I tried it I just held down the on/off button and the Home button until the Apple showed, the second time I let it shut down completely and then started it up again. Will try the restore (but not until this evening) and let you know. Thank you

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it didn't work. Have tried both kinds of restore. First restoring from backup and second as a new device (twice). Still get the same "Accessory not supported" message. Thank goodness I can use the old 30 pin SD reader with the lightning adaptor for my up-coming trip. I tried it again and it worked again. BUT I hate having a piece of Apple equipment that doesn't work.

Talk to Apple about exchanging the reader. There is a chip in the Lightening connector that may be damaged and the two devices aren't properly negotiating the connection.
