I recently bought an emac and it has all the correct requirements needed to run Leopard 10.5 but every time I put the Leopard DVD in the optical drive and close it, it just reopens. The computer says that it can read DVD's so why does it keep spitting the install DVD out?

Thank you in advance!

Hello, I thought it was the right DVD.

But here are the specs on the eMac:

    Model: eMac

    Processor: PowerPC G4

    Processing speed: 1.0 GHz

    Operating system: 10.2.8

    Bus speed: 133 MHz

    CD-ROM: CD/R-RW & DVD-R

Other than these specs I couldn't find anything else because I don't know how to work Jaguar that well.

But why does this computer keep spitting the Leopard Install DVD out everytime I put it in?

Thank you so much for helping me!

Hmmm, does it read other DVDs at all?

  • 6. Re: Why does my emac optical drive open as soon as I shut it?

I tried playing a DVD because it has a DVD player built in but all it did was try to read it for a couple seconds and then it just spit it back out.

Does this mean it doesn't read DVD's? Because it says it does...

CDs & DVDs use different Lasers, voltages, & circuits, so it's easy for one part to work & not the other.

    Long shot, but...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Oh, do you have another Mac witha working Optical drive that has Firewire also?

  • 8. Re: Why does my emac optical drive open as soon as I shut it?

Ok, I'll try the PRAM reset. But yes I do. Can I install Leopard using my other Mac?

  • 9. Re: Why does my emac optical drive open as soon as I shut it?
    BDAqua Level 10 Level 10 (116,480 points)

Ah great, we can use the other Mac as a Big Firewire Optical drive...

If you have another Mac with Firewire & a FW cable, put the Install Disc in the other Mac,  boot the Other Mac into Target mode...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

Boot the eMac with the Option key held down, see if the Install Disc in the other Mac shows up as a boot choice.

Alright, where would I find the Install Disc in the other Mac as a boot choice?

Ok, so I tried this but only the eMac hard drive appears as a boot choice. Do you have anymore ideas?

Thank you for helping me again

And the other Mac wirh the install Disc in it is showing a big floating Firewire symbol???

Thank you so much! I did what you told me but what I did was I put the Leopard Install DVD inside the CD tray and shut it and held it in there with my hand so it couldn't eject itself. Then I booted it from scratch and held down the option key. When the boot menu came up it had both the hard drive as an option and the Leopard Installed DVD as one too!

Thank you for all your help!
