Q: No Sound between LG tv and Apple TV

I have tried almost everything! Just purchased AppleTv3, set it up and have perfect picture but no sound. Read many forums and tried many things eg: new hdmi cable, all hdmi ports, different TV And when I did this all works perfectly! Bring it back to my TV no sound. Tested another device, Boxee and all works ok, picture and sound good. Turned off Dolby in both Apple TV and TV, I am using AirVideo and can't find many settings there but looked anyway. Tried all settings ion TV just don't know what else to do!

In short by setting up on another TV I believe I have prove AppleTv and cables are ok, so it's something to do with TV? Does anyone know if there is a comparability problem with LG and AppleTv? Any other help, any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

AppleTV 3, iOS 6.0.2

Forgot to say I am connecting via HDMI,  ALSO WHEN READING BACK IT SEEMS A LITTLE GARBLED, SORRY! I said at one stage it all works perfectly, I meant to say when I use the AppleTv and cable, through AiVideo it all worked perfectly, but not on the LG. SORRY BUT I am so frustrated!!!! This should work

Thanks in advance for your help

OK, I just fixed same issue in my Sharp Aquos. Find your HDMI (whichever is input for you apple tv) setting on your Tv  make sure it is set to HDMI Digital and not HDMI + Analog.

I have exactly the same problem with my LG TV. However I can't find option to set HDMI to digital rather than analog. I have reported this to Apple but they are unable to resolve my problem. Can anyone help?

Same problem. Discovered it's not the Apple TV but the receiver. If I plug in the HDMI cable on another location, or another tv, I get sound. Turns out my receiver is the issue.

I just got a new LG TV and I can't get Apple TV sound to run through my LG receiver--I can only get it through the TV speakers.

Have the Apple TV set up via HDMI to the TV.  Had the same setup with my previous TV, a Sony, and no problems getting the sound through the receiver.  No matter what I do, I can only get sound through the TV speakers and not the home theater speakers.  Has anyone found a workaround on this yet?

I have an LG 42PG60UD. I just bought an appletv3 recently and I had exactly the same issue. I live in Australia.

    PROBLEM:
Plugged the appletv directly to TV via HDMI. Video worked well but no sound. I don't have a receiver.

    TROUBLESHOOTING:

    I tried the following:

    1. Changed HDMI cable, even bought an Apple HDMI cable: Still no sound
    2. Turned off dolby digital: Still no sound

    3. Reset Apple TV to factory default: Still no sound

    4. Tried AppleTV on my crappy LCD TV in the back room: (Sound & Video) worked perfectly.

This wasn't a solution for me because I wanted the AppleTV to work on my LG TV at the front. So I went to drastic measures and bought a converter for HDMI to RCA (composite). BIG MISTAKE! DO NOT TRY THIS! because quality was terrible, luckily I was able to return it.

    SOLUTION:
I was just about to give up, when I thought I'd play with the settings one more time.

    • Kept everything as default but changed the Screen Resolution via the settings menu

      Audio & Video> TV Resolution> Auto (changed to 1080p 50hz)

Looked like it was picking up 1080p 60hz which my TV didn't like. I don't know how it affects the audio but right after changing that setting the sound worked right away.

SOLVED!!!!!!!! Well for me. I hope this fixes your issues too. Might even solve it for issues with your receiver too.

    All,

I just joined the forum and posted a very similar post this morning as to how my 3rd Gen Apple TV that I purchased yesterday will not yield sound and yet all my other devices will.

My LG Model is LG 42PG6000, plasma, manufactured late 2008, bought Jan. 2009.

If anyone knows a work around i'll be keen to hear.  Thanks.

I have managed to solve this problem by following these steps:

    1. In settings go to audio & video

    2. Tab right to the very bottom & select TV resolution.

    3. Change settings to 1080p HD - 50Hz

My setting was auto which by default was 60Hz. Once I changed it to 50Hz the sound worked.

Don't know whether this is just an issue with LG because I have recently bought a Samsung and all worked ok at 60Hz.

    Hope this helps

I tried to switch the setting to 50Hz but after just an instant I got an error message saying there was a problem.

Eventually I got an optical cable and ran it from the Apple TV to my receiver and got sound through the speakers that way, which probably gives me better sound overall, anyway.

Thanks Erzdawg, I fighted with my new apple TV for more than 4 hours trying all options. (I also have LG TV) bought yesterday and had the similar issue, no audio coming out.

Finally changed the resolution to 1080p 50hz and it works perfectly.

I have seen this setting, But never thought that screen resolution can solve the problem related audio.

Anyhow thanks for this valuable tip.

I had the same problem with my audio. I'm using a Toshiba TV and no sound was coming out until I saw this reply. Changed the resolution setting and now it's working perfectly! Thank you so much!

Well spotted !  Just bought an Apple TV 3 and connected to an LG TV and had the 'no sound' problem.   Changing to 1080p 50Hz fixed it straight away.
