Is it possible to see the name of the font in the list in the actual font?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Also does the same on Imac G5
This depends on the program. For example, in Pages you can check a box in its settings to enable the font preview in the "Format Bar" font menu to have the names listed generically or have them in their respective font face. Other programs may or may not have a similar feature.
Sorry, I meant to say that it was in Font Book. I would think this would be a basic preference but I couldn't find anything to change the list from all one font. Thanks!
Are you wanting to set one font as default for all applications? At least to me, it isn't clear what you are wanting/trying to accomplish, but then I'm a little dense at times. 😁
I think you can right click on the font and choose "Show in Finder".
What is it you would like to see? Something like this?
Which version of Mac OS X are you running? This is the OS 10.8 community. Your profile says 10.6.8. Font Book is not exactly the same in the two OS.
Gerald nailed it — that's what I want!!! I know some of my apps have it but I thought it would be easiest if I could have Font Book open in the background as a reference while I used whatever.
for Eustace, my "about this Mac" says 10.8.3. Maybe the last time there was a question posted from us it was on our old desktop or his laptop and the profile hasn't been updated. That's all I can think of. My hubby usually deals with all of the tech stuff. I'm trying to be better about finding my own answers now that I have a new computer though. So far I'm psyched that I found my way to you guys—Yay Me!!

I think the problem was not resolved. We merely figured out what was the question.
You have to manually update your profile. At the top of the page where it shows you signed in, click on your picture and it will take you to your profile page.

If you are looking for a third-party utility that can display the various font faces in a list, then there might be one available (I'm not sure which is the best one, but there may be a good free one out there); however, if you want to view them in various font menus that you access in the system then as I mentioned above this will be an application-specific behavior, and some will support it whereas others will not.
Despite this, one crude approach to previewing fonts is to use Apple's "Stacks" view for folders in the Dock. To do this, go to the Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts/ folder and drag it to the Dock next to the trash. Then click it to open it and you will see your fonts listed, with capital and lower-case A characters in the font face. You can then highlight a font either by hovering over it with your mouse or by using the arrow keys, and then press the Space bar to show a preview of it for you to get a better sense of its style.
The fonts on the system will be in the following folders:
Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts
Macintosh HD/System/Library/Fonts
Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Fonts (this library folder is hidden but can be revealed by holding Option then opening the Go meny in the Finder).
