Q: Question

Our iPad is a few years old.  The salesman didn't mention which version it was that we bought and as it was our first (and only) one, we neglected to ask.  I have no idea if its a 1 or 2 or anything else.  I don't have the iCloud info so that tells you how old it is.  I can't find any place that tells me which version of iOS I have.  I DO do all of the upgrades when I get notice.  But I'm trying to download the Kobo books app and it tells me I need iOS 6.3.  Will the older version of our iPad accept that?

Thanks!

iPad, No idea which iPad we have.

Connect the iPad to your computer and use iTunes to upgrade the iPad.

We'll need to determine what iPad it is.

An easy way to tell if its an iPad one or later is if it has a camera. If has a camera then its at least an iPad 2.

    Otherwise its an iPad 1.

To be certain about what generation it is, Go into Settings->General->About

In there look for the Model, and the iOS version. Both are listed there.

    Post back with that info.

    Identifying iPad models

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5452?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

The iPad's A#, identifying the model, is engraved on the back/bottom of the iPad.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
