Q: weird aperture artifact

i have been getting this artifact after minimizing Aperture lately on my desktop. anyone know if this is something to be concerned about and/or what to do other than a restart? i ran a permissions rebuild recently due to some issues with missing images and/or thumbnails/previews. TIAaperture artifact.png

if you are having hardware trouble or suspect it, it would be better to ask in the hardware related forums. They will be better able to help you.

 

also, can anyone please advise as to whether i should only reset PRAM and SMC and fsck(not sure what this is exactly) when i have a problem or if i should do this periodically?

Only, if you you are having an issue, see: When to reset NVRAM or PRAM

 

After resetting the PRAM you will have to reset some parameters.

 

fsck(not sure what this is exactly)

fsck - short for file system check  - will check the file system on your system drive.

    is that the export dialogue?

     

    Yesterday was a similar post here: Re: aperture export dialog

     

    Perhaps you can compare notes with the other poster.

     

    Unfortunately I have no solution.

    Do you see the same when you are working from a different user account?

    argh. thanks.

     

    sometime i feel like all i do is troubleshoot mac hardware or software problems over here. i can't quite figure it out. i have two machines and i can't understand why i seem to have so many issues with both of them. if it isn't something with one then i am dealing with something on the other.

     

    erg. i hate hearing gee that looks really messed up. lol!

    HotWheels  it might be a grarphics card issue.  Id first read   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805  which Im sure you are familar with.  Safty Boot might help, but dont open Ap while in saftey boot, wont work.  Then id look into all the secret hand shake startup and shut down voodoo like resetting PRM,  SMC,   fsck.  After all that Id take it in for  a video card check  But Im kinda a cowboy out here in Arizona.  cheers, dbm

    David, I just had a graphics card issue, for me it looked more random like this:

    If it is hardware trouble or other system wide trouble, then hotwheels should see the same broken menus when working from a different user account.

     

    Did you test it? Is the problem independent of your account, Jon?

    Then id look into all the secret hand shake startup and shut down voodoo like resetting PRM,  SMC,   fsck.

    If it happens in the other account, then try David's suggestions:

    Hi Leonie  yea I dont think its a card but if the general maintence stuff   and the preference n cache dont solve it ...then .... a good re-boot  cant hurt.... I think.  In fact I think I have seen some weird screen draws.  I wonder if he has two video cards and the one with less ram was on as when its in battery power?

    hi guys. BIG thank you.

     

    so i have one video card and it was an upgrade from the original that came with the computer and put in while under applecare warranty (nvidia geforce 8800gt). that said i just put in a new hard drive for my OS drive (bay 1) that was failing and i /also/ just sent in a G-TEch external drive that seems to have been giving me boot problems for one reason or another (also a very easy exchange). now i am getting a Carbon Copy Cloner error on my /external/ backup of the data drive which is all starting to make me rather paranoid.

     

    ANYWAY, back to the topic at hand. it seems as if the OS drive (bay 1) is failing again i think?

     

    i have run a Tech Tools Surface Scan of all my drives and it appear the OS drive (bay 1) is coming up with a failure indicating 31 bad sectors.

     

    can anyone recommend whether i should just replace (or reformat??) the OS drive? or maybe buy Disk Warrior?

    ah, sorry - the drive showing the bad sectors is the internal CLONE of my OS drive (in bay 3).

     

    the OS drive in bay 1 shows as OK in a Tech Tools Surface Scan.

     

    so the drive i replaced is the OS drive in bay 1 and it seems like it checks out fine but the CLONE of this drive in bay 3 may be failing which means it also needs replacing?

     

    i have a boot camp installation on this drive in addition to the OS and this all seems very weird.
