is Wine software safe

I am looking to install Wine on my Mac. It seems to be able to open .exe fine. Does anyone have information about this software and it is safe to use it on a Mac.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Its safe but the performance is horrible. If you want to run MS Windows applications you would be much better off getting a licensed copy of Window's 7 and installing using either Parallels or VM Ware's Fusion.

I tested it once. I downloaded every Windows virus I could find and couldn't get any of them to work. Very disappointing.
