I'm trying to manually manage my songs in iTunes. When I select 'Manually manage music and videos' I don't get a "resulting dialog box". I get the warning that iTunes will "erase this iPhone". HELP. How do I do this?

That's right. You can not 'sync' and manually manage your media at the same time. It's one or the other.

That is the article I am following to a tee. Except it doesn't give me a OK in the "resulting dialoge box". I get a message that it will "erase this iPhone". I'm afraid that if I accept this option it will totally erase my iPhone. i just want to unselect syncing and manually manage mt music.

That's correct, every time you switch between manually managing & syncing, ALL iTunes content is first erased from your phone. That's the way it works.

I'm becoming UNenamored with Apple.
Honestly, I've never understood why users want to manually manage with an iPhone. The real advantage to manually managing is the ability to put content on your device from multiple computers, something you can't do with an iPhone. An iPhone will sync or manually manage with one computer at a time. Thus, there is no benefit to manually managing with an iPhone. But, to each their own.

I am totally agreeing with your reasoning to manually manage and then I read about "can't do with an iPhone".
The HORROR.
I am new to smart phones and got no instruction/ support from the Verizon store where I purchased said phone. Love the phone for use during running, till I filled it up with music. I'll rethink my strategy.

Just create playlists, you can then add to or delete 'till your heart's content. Simmple, effective & works as good as manually managing.
