Migration Assistant

Hi My imac appears to be dead (14 months 😟 ) and thinking of buying a mac mini the imac is backed up on a portable HD, would migration assistant work in transferring files to the mini? Sorry if it's a dumb Q.

If you backed up through Time Machine or by making a bootable clone, yes. If you otherwise backed up, it might not be able to.

If you do use the Migration Assistant, run it as part of the Setup Assistant the first time you turn the new computer on for best results.

Yes, What problems are you having with the iMac, if is an hard drive problem it will be cheaper to replace the hard drive.

Yes. It will work fine. I did that a couple of weeks ago. A wired network does it faster.

Thanks Niel, Illaass, yes it was through time machine to a western digital portable HD.

Hi Eric - thanks. The imac kept giving me a black screen and now won't power up at all, gets half way through the progress bar and switches off. It's been nothing but trouble since I've had so decided to change.
