USB port not generating enough power to charge iphone

I think my USB ports may be malfunctioning. When i connect my iphone 4s, itune recognize the device but somehow will not charge it. It'll SYNC data, but battery doesn't show up to charge. My WesternDigital external HD also plugged into USB port works fine as TimeMAchine backs up on schedule. I've eliminate the cord/adapter as issue as iPhone does charge from outlet. Also plugged it into Windows laptop, and iPhone charges there. Have plugged iphone (both mine and my wife's iPhone4S) into all 3 USB ports and same result: iphone will not charge via USB iMac ports.

Looks like is this a h/w issue ... fixable? Too expensive to fix???

iMac is 21.5" late 2009 model ... beyond Apple Protection plan obviously.

Anyone out there run into this before???

Try doing 2-3 SMC Resets back to back. Sometimes they do not work the first time. If you have never done one the instruction are in:

Did it twice, and no luck ... iTunes doesn't launch when iphone is plugged in. When I manually open iTunes, it take longer than before for iTunes to eventually see/recognize iPhone, but it will not charge it. Similar is true for iPhoto ... doesn't open when iPhone is plugged in AND iPhoto does not see iPhone at all?!?!

Should I do 3 consecutive SMC resets? Does this mean it's H/W issue? If so, this a sign of more h/w related issues to come??!?
