my ipod froze on the reset apple logo g4

my ipod nano g4 froze yesterday, and i tried to reset it, and once the apple logo came up as part of the reset, it never finished resetting. it stayed on the apple logo for 20 minutes, so i tried re-resetting it, and it did the same thing and stayed frozen until it died. today i tried plugging it into my computer and it didnt register it at all and nothing changed. for a while now before this happened my laptop was telling me to scan it for defects or something, but i figured it would delete half my songs so i ignored it... bad idea. i have no idea what to do now, my warenty expired years ago and ive had this ipod for about four or five years now. dont say reset it becase clearly that's not working...
