iPhoto privledges, a real PIA

My wife and I went on a holiday andn took many photos on both our iPhones, then we shared using Photo Stream.

We are both trying to document our trip using each others pics, but this has been a real pain in the ***.

Every time we try to insert a photo that may have come from the other's iphone, it will not allow due to privledges.

What the **** do we do????

I thought using Apple was easy and this is pathetic to say the least, given that we have shared the photos, so thought that implied that we can use them.....

How exactly is your setup?

Do you have separate iPhoto Libraries on different Macs? Or one shared iPhoto library used in two different accounts on the same mac?

then we shared using Photo Stream.

Did you share the photos to Shared Photo Streams or did you share them to your respective "My Photo Streams"?

leonieDF,

To answer your questions;

- we have separate Macs, each with their own library

- I donot think we are sharing the photo library, since I have not set this up

Photo Stream, not sure I understand how to respond to your question.

The process we used was;

- Selected the photos in iPhoto, them dragged them to Photosteam, selected new Photostream, and shared using the prompt within iPhoto.

Below is a screen shoot of what my Photostream window looks like.

User uploaded file

I imported the shared photos into my library andI thought this would work just fine.

This was very straight forward, until I was composing a document using Pages, Pages would not allow me to insert the shared photos due to a permission problem.

Did we do something wrong, or is there a better method of accomplishing this, that is not too complicated.

The way you are doing this should work just fine.

  • "Selected the photos in iPhoto, them dragged them to Photosteam, selected new Photostream, and shared using the prompt within iPhoto"
  • "I imported the shared photos into my library"

How are you using the shared photos in Pages? I open the Media Browser in Pages and drag the photos from the "Photos" tab > iPhoto (Photo stream or events) to the document. Is that what you are doing? What exactly is the error message (some permission problem) you are seeing?

Can you use the photos in Pages, if you export them from iPhoto and drag them to the document?

If you export the originals to your Desktop and use "File > Get Info", what are the permissions you are seeing?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to your library:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

This is what I ended up doing, after trying what you and others have suggested.

Thanks for your help

As I originally mentioned using iphoto has been a real pain. I have spent over 3 hours trying to get iphoto to work to create a Pages document that took less than 30 mins to compose (about 2000 words with about 25 pics).

Using the computer to publish creative moments is supposed to be easy, and yes it is easier than 25 years ago, but that doesn't mean that the pain thresh hold is low.

OT,

I ended up doing your Fix#2 - as you said it created a new photo library.

Unfortunately it did not fix my problem. Have to think the problem resides in iPhoto, and not PhotoStream, but not sure.

On a separate note, the # of pics in the new library match the # of pics in the original library.

My main concern was about face identification, which appeared to be intact - I am tired of reviewing the same faces and photos over and over again...

I don't have any photo books, calendars or slide shows of any importance - so not a problem

The new library is about 60% the size of the original library, other than thumbnails for ios devices, why the large difference?

I am reluctant to make a permanent change to the new library other than to conserve disk space - your thoughts on possible risks on users making the switch????

Unfortunately it did not fix my problem. Have to think the problem resides in iPhoto, and not PhotoStream, but not sure.

The Photo stream photos are stored in your user library and not in your iPhoto Library until you import them - there may be a permissions problem with the folder containing the images in the User Library.

You may want to check, if the photos downloaded to the User Library are readable or corrupted, and if the permissions are set correctly.

Open this folder and browse the sub folders:

~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets

(to open this folder quickly, select the complete line above, ctrl-click it, and use the "Reveal" command from the pop-up menu).

Are the image files readable by Preview?

So next question - what is the risk in deleting this Cache?

There is no risk. It is even recommended by Apple, if you look at the support article I pointed to:

If you need to free up space on your hard drive, or are directed to do so by another article, you can locate and remove the iPod Photo Cache folder(s). A new one will be recreated the next time you sync Photos with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Deleting this folder will not remove the original images from your library.

The only drawback is, that the next sync with iTunes will take longer, since the cached previews will have to be recreated. And you will need to keep enough free space to be able to recreate this Cache.
