White Macbook Unibody Hinge cracks?

Hi there,

I purchased my macbook back in 2010, as you call might be able to tell it is way out of warranty, but just after it was out i took it in to apple store Birmingham for another issue i had with the software, the Genius then noticed that the hinges of my laptop screen had cracked and told me that i could have the screen replaced free of charge. To this i was very happy becuase i thought it might have been something i had done.

Now a little more then a year on the same thing has happened, 2 hair line cracks have appeared again in the same place as the first one. so i took it back to the store again where i was once again that they would replace the screen free of charge.

Now i know that they are going/done this free of charge twice now, but i am a little concerned that it will just happen again in the next 6-12 months and ill have to make another trip to the shop.

has anybody else had this problem where they have done anymore then just replace the screen??

Thanks

Tom

Hi Alastair Riddle!

That is a very great question, and I do have an answer for your question and will need to call your local Apple Store and ask them.

At this point since the MacBook Unibody White has been replaced by the metal MacBook Pro, Air, and Just MacBook these machines are OBS at this point and can't update to the latest software so Apple sadly calls them OBS and Apple Stores and Repair Centers more then likely threw out or recycled the parts for them, if you ever have any more questions I am here for you.

I had my screen replaced about this time last year on a 2010 MacBook for the hinge cracking.

Unsurprisingly I have just checked it and again there are cracks. In addition to this the screen itself is starting to discolour.

I have about 6 months of applecare left - I'll be phoning up next week and politely requesting a replacement MacBook pro, as it is clear the problems have not been sorted and will reappear, only this time once I'm out of warranty.

Yeah, well my warranty is a 3 year education one, which only comes with 1 year of phone support.
The guy just told me to ignore all the automated charge messages.

Anyway..I phoned back and the call got escalated twice to senior level. I had a total of 3 faults to report but he said that wasn't enough to justify a replacement at this stage. I was told if the crack reappears for a third time then they will look into sending out a replacement for me, but at this stage they are only willing to offer a repair again.

So we'll see what happens - I fully expect it to return at some point down the line as it appears they haven't actually solved the issue and are just replacing faulty with faulty!

Ohh fair enough, thats good then.

and i had am idea that it might be three times, to get a replacement, (i had a problem with a old laptop that had to happen 3 times and they gave me a new one)

well this is the second display i will be having, if it happens again ill be ringing them up and asking, even though i don't have extended warranty do you reckon they will still talk to me?

Obviously I don't know for sure but I think they would still talk to you! They've set up a replacement program for the fault, so they are well aware that it occurs and is relatively common. So if you explain you're still having problems with it I imagine they will deal with it - if it happens again then phone the technical support section and ask for the call to be escalated and request a replacement.

I recon you're right - i definitely got the impression from the guy that there was a 3 faults then replacement attitude to it..fingers crossed it doesn't come to that though!

Cheers.

I had one that was out of warranty when I brought it in to the Apple Store and the Genius that I took it to, I took it because my hinges broke and the screen didn't line up properly on the computer when it was closed. I had to pay for that which I was expecting because it was out of warranty. However, while I had it in there, and while I was talking to the Genius, he noticed something that was broke that was common and that they knew about, and they took care of that while it was in there free of charge. While it wasn't a screen, it was a MacBook that had the chipping around the screen and around the top plate of the case, they took care of it free of charge. The replaced all those pieces, put in a new keyboard, and a new trackpad all with the top cover as well. When I got it back, it was like a whole different computer. It was nice to get the customer service like that.
