Printer drivers and Mac OS 9.2.2 for Classic support

I'm trying to use a Lexmark X75 printer, and I've downloaded the driver for it from Lexmark's website. However, the website also tells me: "Lexmark AIO Printer Driver for MAC OS X (10.1.5, 10.2.x, 10.3.x, 10.4.x). You must download and install the MAC OS 9.2.2 driver for Classic support. MAC OS 9.2.2 must have Carbonlib 1.6 or greater installed. MAC OS 10.1.5, OS 9.2.2, and carbonlib 1.6 (or greater) can be downloaded from Apples software update web site."

Can someone tell me how to do this? I've attempted, and failed miserably.

Mac, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, camerongale -

1.4 GHz, 1 CPU

If that is the original processor for it, then your G4 is not OS 9 bootable.

If that is the case, any downloadable OS 9 update is not usable - the installers for those run only when the machine is booted to OS 9. I suspect the same may be true for the CarbonLib 1.6 download.

Have you installed Classic on it from the original disks that came with it? If so, it should already be at OS 9.2.2, and should include CarbonLib v. 1.6.

If you have not yet installed Classic, do so. The original disks that came with your machine have that capability. One or more of these should help in doing that -

The Lexmark driver download for OS 9.2.2 may not work as intended, if the installer for it expects the machine to be booted to OS 9.

Hey Guys, Hi Cameron.

Are you all sure any of that's any more than a red herring?

I stand to be corrected, and "You must download and install the MAC OS 9.2.2 driver for Classic support…" looks like a clumsy way of saying: "For Classic support, you must download and install the MAC OS 9.2.2 driver…"

Then, Cameron reads as though he doesn't have and doesn't have a use for either Classic or pure OS 9, no?

I don't know Lexmark's development policies and I guess it's possible that an X printer needs OS 9 components but it doesn't seem likely…

Hi, Cameron et als. I'm with Robbie on this, except I seriously doubt that any printer being used only in OS X requires any OS 9 driver for any reason. If you don't want to run any applications in Classic mode and print from them on the Lexmark, my assumption is that you can simply ignore the quoted message. Like Robbie, I read it to mean "If you want this printer to work in Classic mode, you have to download and install such and such." If you don't need the printer to work in Classic mode, you don't need any of that stuff.

Before anyone goes any farther with this, it would be helpful to know: will you need to print from Classic applications, or not?
